About a year ago, we renovated our home. It was the kind of renovation that requires you to move out for several months. Serious. We took the house down to the studs and rebuilt every room except the kitchen and the master bath - both of which had been redone several years ago. The renovation was well worth it!
Here are a few highlights:
Fireplace
The fireplace is the focal point of the room. We choose the warm, neutral stacked stone for the upper section of the fireplace and a sand colored concrete for the lower section. The concrete front and sides were made by my handy husband. It was a messy job, but worth it. The firebox itself is a sleek modern design that complements the overall style of the room. The mantle was a DIY project. It's solid cherry that we selected from the lumber yard, cut planed, sanded, and finished. Floating Shelves and Cabinets
Another amazing job by my handy husband who built the shelves and cabinet. The cabinets added much needed storage for media equipment (right) and serve ware (left). The doors are soft close. Both projects were made with solid cherry. They are accessorized with items from West Elm, one of my favorite stores.
Sofa
We are shocked that our 10 year old Natuzzi sofa still looks good. It's a shade lighter than baseball glove leather. The sectional works perfectly for how we live. The chaise lounge is my spot! The pillows and blanket are from West Elm.
Stairs
Are you tired of hearing this yet...? The stairs and wood rail were also custom built by my handy hubby. Each step was built from solid cherry joined to match the grain. They feel like sculpture (to me!). There is amazing hidden, automated storage in the stairs for "adult beverages." The stainless steel rails were custom made by a local artisan welder.
Foyer
Our row house is open concept so we don't technically have a foyer, but we have a console table and coat rack (another custom made project) so hey, it's a foyer to us! I promise to blog about this at some point, but check out Bob! He is a commissioned work of art by the amazing local artist, Dana Ellyn. Why commission a portrait of Bob Marley? It's complicated. :) My husband had a poster of this image mounted to wood that had traveled with him from home to home over many years. When we merged households, he was prepared to find another home for his beloved mounted poster. So, instead of banishing it to a future man cave, I had the image painted on canvas. We still don't agree on who this painting was actually for (him or me)!
Rug
Gotcha! There is no rug. We actually just bought one this week, but she's so gorgeous that she deserves a blog post of her own. Come back next eek for a more formal intro!
